Culture Festival

It was great seeing the Culture Festival Global Village on the Concourse yesterday, lots of great stalls and societies. However it does feel that, not just the Global Village, but the entire culture festival doesn't have much representation of European countries especially our own. We have lots of traditional customs and events that happen throughout the calendar year but hardly any representation. I've told international students about different British customs we have around the country and seem surprised that it still exists and haven't had the opportunity to see it for themselves. It seems weird that we can appreciate other culture's traditions but ridicule or forget our own.

To begin with thank you very much for your suggestion. The first thing I’d like to point out is that we very much did have representation of European Countries across the Culture Festival, be it in the form of language session that the Italian society organised or the presence of many European students at the Travel fair representing their countries. True it could have been better but I’d say overall students were quite pleased.

Secondly this was a pilot year for the culture festival as it’s the first time it was held and whilst we tried our level best to try and get as many societies involved and represent their country the uptake could have been better, we’ve collected a lot of feedback and rest assured every year moving forward will be bigger and better as far as the Culture Festival is concerned.

Essentially the entire festival week was student groups supported and fuelled and we can only do so much to help them. At the end of the day we need them to come forward. So if you know of any European or British students who’d like to put a stall up at next years’ festival please do tell them to get in touch with us as we’ll be more than happy to help and support them.

If you’ve got any further questions regarding this or would just like to come in for a chat do not hesitate to send me an email on vpcommunities@unionsouthampton.org
