HARTLEY LIBRARY SHOULD BUY BOOKS FROM GRADUATING STUDENTS

Hartley library should set up a scheme in which they buy books off graduating students or students who no longer need a book which they bought for a module. This way it creates more books in the library that students need. Books can be sold fairly cheaply as most students just want them gone.

Hello!

The Library have just responded to me with the following:

We have looked into this suggestion and are unable to resource a service for reselling student books.  The Library staff are constantly working with academics to source books for students and ensure that we have the correct edition and number of copies in the Library.  We encourage students to feedback to academic staff and their academic engagement librarian if they are unable to find a resource for their independent study or course via the Library.    SUSU may wish to take up the idea of having a book sale as part of their services.  Another alternative is Amazon.  Many students already use Amazon and resell books on their website.

This is admittedly a shame, but hopefully at least answers your question as to if this is possible. The Union are also launching a Bookswap area within Building 42 where books can be donated, so that offers another option.

I'm going to close this You Make Change submission for now, but if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to drop me an email on vpeducation@susu.org.

All the best,

Hello!

Thanks for getting in touch - I really like the sound of this, and so am interested to hear how the Library think it might work from an implementation perspective. I'll drop them an email, and will let you know as soon as they get back to me. Note that because of the University Closure Days over the break this might take a bit longer than usual, so please bear with us.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to drop me an email on vpeducation@susu.org.

All the best,

Samuel Dedman (VP Education 2017/18)
