Wilderness Medicine

Southampton Wilderness and Expedition Medicine Society = SWEMS! We run talks, scenario sessions and teaching events themed around Wilderness (jungle, deep sea, desert, polar) medicine, but are most well-known for our group walks and camping trips which in the past year took us to areas of natural beauty such as Brecon, Snowdonia, the South Downs and Dorset. We have a huge mix of experience when it comes to outdoorsy stuff/wilderness medicine, so our camping trips and teaching sessions are very relaxed and cater to all levels and backgrounds. We are a small but welcoming society who love the outdoors both for its beauty and the chats and friendships which happen within. If you love walking in the natural world with genuinely genuine people then SWEMS is for you, and we will welcome you with open arms and muddy boots.

We are a society who enjoy taking medicine outdoors. We arrange workshops, local hikes and weekend camping trips which aim to help students develop their medical skills outside of the hospital environment, while being part of a fun, social and inclusive society. We cover a wide range of topics including mountain, jungle, polar, desert and ocean medicine. Our local walks help our members to explore and learn to navigate the stunning New Forest and South Downs national parks, whilst our weekend trips take us further afield to test our outdoor skills, and escape university life, in places such as the Brecon Beacons, the Peak District and the South Dorset coast.Come and join our enthusiastic society for all years and abilities where we hope you will meet like-minded people, make new memories and have great adventures!
