Riding

Hi all, welcome to SURC (Southampton University's Riding Club). We look forward to seeing you all throughout the year whether you are interested in trialling for teams, taking part in lessons or coming along to one of our great socials! We can't wait to see some old and new faces, all are welcome. Please come along to our bunfight stall in September, in the meantime if you have any questions feel free to email our riding account (riding@soton.ac.uk) or any of our committee members below. We are also active on our social media accounts, and encourage you to follow them to get the most up to date information!

The Riding Club aims to offer something for everyone, whether you have ridden on national teams or have never been on a horse before. 

Some of the activities we offer:

  • 2 BUCS competition teams with weekly training sessions (championship and trophy leagues which compete upto national level alongside hundreds of UK universities, we compete under BSJ and BD 85-90cm courses and Novice/Prelim tests
  • A friendlies team who compete in the same style as BUCs but at a lower level. Also good for those who cannot commit to weekly training sessions and don't have competition experience
  • Weekly lessons for all abilities (beginner to advanced)
  • Discounted lessons for club members at Ampfield Riding Stables
  • Regular nights out
  • Meet ups, fun days out and full club events
  • A variety of sober socials and non-riding activities
  • Annual Christmas meal and Athletics Union Ball

  • Teams Managers are responsible for choosing the BUCS A teams, organising trials our home competitions alongside communicating with the other Universities in our BUCS league and coordinating dates for their home competitions.

  • Friendlies manager have the same role as the teams managers apart from they organise teams which are not BUCS affiliated. These teams have a more relaxed view on training and are open to a wider range of abilities to allow those who want to have a go at competing a chance to do so. All matches between universities are friendly leagues organised by the different university riding clubs.

Membership Information

These are the current membership fees offered by Riding, although many clubs and societies offer a free period for new members to try out their activities.

After this, join in as much or as little as you want and only pay for what you take part in. You do not require a membership to take part in one taster session at the beginning of each semester. For team trials, members must have a full membership. (this is a non refundable purchase)
Semester 1 Membership£35.0022/09/2025 - 24/01/2026This membership allows you to access all parts of the club for the first semester (valid until 24/01/26). Join in as much or as little as you want and only pay for what you take part in. Get involved in weekly lessons, socials, team training, competitions, hacking, beach rides, holidays and so much more!! You do not require a membership to take part in one taster sessions at the beginning of each semester. For team trials, members must have a FULL membership. (this is a non refundable purchase)
Semester 2 Membership£35.0026/01/2026 - 13/06/2026This membership allows you to access all parts of the club for the second semester (valid from 26/01/26 until 13/06/26). Join in as much or as little as you want and only pay for what you take part in. Get involved in weekly lessons, socials, team training, competitions, hacking, beach rides, holidays and so much more!! You do not require a membership to take part in one taster sessions at the beginning of each semester. For team trials, members must have a FULL membership. (this is a non refundable purchase)
SOCIAL Membership£5.0022/09/2025 - 31/07/2026Receive information about socials and what the club is upto! Join us for nights out, sober socials, organised walks in the New Forest and more! This membership does NOT grant you access to RIDING activities and events. (this is a non refundable purchase)
