Model United Nations
SOTONMUN is a society dedicated to those who enjoy discussing politics and international relations, as well as a wide variety of other issues that individuals are facing day-to-day. When participating in the Model United Nations, you take on the role of a delegate, representing countries from around the world in a wide range of committee's, discussing issues that range from environmental problems, to education, to international security and more! You will have the opportunity to attend a variety of conferences in the UK and abroad such as LIMUN and our very own SOTONMUN. Not only is Model United Nations an excellent addition to any CV, but also the lessons you learn and the people you meet are truly unique to MUN. People from all walks of life, thinking in different ways is sure to both challenge and hone your view of the world. We meet every Tuesday at 18:00PM, in Building 100, Room 4011. The Committee
All clubs and societies within the Students' Union are run entirely by students. The student committee for Model United Nations this year are:
President
- The President holds a central role in the leadership and management of the Model United Nations (MUN) society, overseeing various aspects to ensure its effective functioning and growth. This role involves responsibilities related to external conference participation, event organisation, committee management, decision-making, and collaboration with other committee members.
Treasurer
- As Treasurer, you play a critical role in managing the financial affairs of the group, ensuring responsible budgeting and grant writing, accurate record-keeping, and transparent financial practices. Your responsibilities include overseeing accounts, managing funds, approving expenditures, and collaborating with other committee members on financial decision-making.
Welfare Secretary
- The welfare officer's role is to provide welfare support to members of the society, and to help them feel at ease. A large part of this role will be helping those who are nervous about public speaking.

General Secretary
- The General Secretary holds a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Model United Nations (MUN) society, both internally and externally. This position encompasses a diverse set of responsibilities ranging from Chair training to coordinating logistics for external conferences. The General Secretary plays a crucial role in fostering inclusion, managing risk, and providing support to delegates, while also overseeing administrative tasks such as minute-taking and correspondence handling.
Conference Secretary
- The Conference Secretary plays a key role in organising internal and external conference preparations. They are the main spokesperson for any inquiries into Model United Nations Conferences as well as the head delegate for any external conference delegation that does not include the President of the Group. The responsibilities include managing conference logistics, including travel and accommodation as well as organising one day conferences which serve to introduce members to the definitive version of the group’s activities.
GenSec
Publicity Secretary / Social Secretary
- As the Publicity Officer and Social Secretary, you hold a critical role in effectively communicating the Group's activities to its members, the Students' Union, and the broader community. Your responsibilities include organising and advertising meetings and events, managing social media channels, maintaining the website, creating press releases and articles, and fostering membership growth. Additionally, you serve as the spokesperson for the club, manage publicity administration, establish connections with external organisations, and collaborate with other committee members to ensure successful event organisation and promotion.
Social Secretary
- As Social Secretary, you hold a pivotal role in curating and executing enjoyable social and cultural experiences for the group's members, fostering camaraderie, and strengthening connections within the Club/Society. Your focus lies on organising events like nights out and Winterballs, essential for enhancing member commitment and community spirit. This role involves meticulous planning, effective communication, collaboration with fellow committee members, and ensuring the safety and inclusivity of all events.
Vice President
- The Vice President plays a pivotal role in the leadership and management of the Model United Nations (MUN) society, taking on diverse responsibilities that contribute to its smooth operation. This role involves website management, session coordination, collaboration with other committee members, advocacy for equality and diversity, and assistance with various administrative tasks.
Membership Information
These are the current membership fees offered by Model United Nations, although many clubs and societies offer a free period for new members to try out their activities.
