Jazz Orchestra
SUJO is Southampton University's auditioned big band! We are a Jazz group made up of 21 talented musicians who perform regular gigs across campus and around Southampton. Our recent highlights include being live with BBC Radio Solent, playing at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh and hosting a workshop with renowned trumpeter Andy Bush! We run a rehearsal each week on a Friday Evening from 6:45-9:30pm (with a break in the middle) and then at least one gig per term but are hopefully offering a wider range of opportunities this year! Repertoire is decided by committee, however we are open to suggestions, and tries to cover a variety of styles to suit everyone's taste throughout the year.
The main focus is to have an enjoyable and fun time whilst also playing charts to a high standard (and cooking like there's no tomorrow!😎). There will be a few main socials throughout the year and smaller ones more regularly to keep that band spirit alive. It is all student led and at the end of the year, anyone has the opportunity to go for an elected role on the committee.
Charts we've played in the last year include Computer, A Cool Breeze, Backrow Politics and Quartermaster to name a few!
We are also fortunate enough to receive coaching workshops from talented musicians on the UK jazz scene ranging from bringing out stylistic nuances to phrasing when improvising.

The Committee
All clubs and societies within the Students' Union are run entirely by students. The student committee for Jazz Orchestra this year are:
President
- Responsible for the general running of the society, booking rooms, instruments and gigs and organising rehearsal schedules. Work in conjunction with the MD to choose repertoire. Also responsible for the overseeing of all other committee positions.
Treasurer
- Responsible for the bank account of the society and any transactions the society makes. Responsible for making sure all members have paid their subs at the start of the year.
Welfare Officer
- Responsible for ensuring band members are enjoying rehearsals and are safe during society events outside of weekly rehearsals
Librarian
- Responsible for the collection, printing and finding of music. Also responsible for organising the music library to keep it organised.
Musical Director
- To run rehearsals, choose repertoire and help organise and manage gigs
Publicity/Social Media Officer
- Responsible for regularly updating the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages with photos, and creating events for gigs on Facebook.
Tour Secretary
- Responsible for organising a tour for the societies members at the end of the academic year. This includes working with the Treasurer to book accommodation, travel and also book gigs to play on the tour.
Membership Information
These are the current membership fees offered by Jazz Orchestra, although many clubs and societies offer a free period for new members to try out their activities.

Membership fees go towards paying sound technicians, using a PA, buying music and subsidising socials, merch etc |
