Symphony Orchestra

Creative Industries

The Southampton University Symphony Orchestra is widely recognised as one of the leading student orchestras in the UK. The orchestra seeks to provide the most talented musicians at the university with the opportunity to study and perform some of the most challenging symphonic repertoire.

We cater both for members seeking to pursue careers in professional music, as well as attracting those wishing to continue and develop their performance skills whilst completing degrees in non-musical subjects.

Many of our members go on to conservatoires after their time at Southampton, while others become doctors, engineers, teachers and more! We take on a full professional programme each term, and repertoire highlights in the last couple of years have included symphonies by Mahler, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky.

In addition to the four concerts a year, our members enjoy a variety of socials and a European tour. Entry requirements and audition dates can be found on our website. Auditions for our 2017/18 season are now open. All auditions for clarinet, flute and trumpet happen on 30th September with other instruments on 2nd/3rd October! Auditions only take 10 minutes so why not come during a lunch break or in the evening after lectures? Membership Information

These are the current membership plans offered by Symphony Orchestra, although many groups offer a free period for new members to try out their group.

  • Year Membership (£65)
The membership fee covers the costs of all music, rehearsal and concert venue for the year as well our Music Director fees. Membership fees have been kept to an absolute minimum because we are aware that students would not wish to pay loads of money. The rest we make up for in ticket sales by selling out our concerts!

Assassins Society - The Guild

Outdoor Activities, Sport and Health

The Assassins' guild is based upon the idea of players tracking down, locating and performing 'mock assassinations' upon other members within the society, whilst trying to avoid detection by their targets, being located themselves or being assassinated themselves. It is a game of cunning and creativity, with each player being totally free to choose how they approach their challenges. The game is not meant to be taken seriously, with players actually harming or engaging in any form of physical or verbal confrontation, as the name might suggest, but instead taken with a touch of humor and light-heartedness
