Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month, with International Women's Day celebrated on Tuesday 08 March. Join us at SUSU as we celebrate and learn about women's contributions to history, culture and society.

We have lots of events and activities planned to celebrate this month - SUSU supports all those who identify as women this Women’s History Month and beyond, with all our events being inclusive to all, take a look below at everything you can get involved with!

Diary of a Woman

01 March - 31 March: Take a look at our Women's History Month display in the main entrance of SUSU Building 42! There you can find our "Diary of a Woman", which is open for anyone who identifies as female to add your experiences of being a woman or what makes you proud to be a woman. You can also find free menstrual products and Women's History Month badges.

WSA Life Drawing

Thursday 09 March, 16:30 - 18:30, WSA 63P (portacabin): Research shows that attending life-drawing classes has a positive effect on body image, particularly for women. It helps develop realistic notions of what bodies look like, and to see the female nude in an artistic context. This session is open to any student. Whether you have attended a life drawing class before or not, everyone is welcome! The class will be untutored but there will be some prompts to try different techniques and materials. Thursday 09 March, 19:00 - 01:00, The Stag's: Our legendary Stags Karaoke is back, and this week it's all about pop divas! From Adele to Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift to Beyonce, sing along to incredible tunes from incredible female artists for Women's History Month. Prizes available for our singers! Free entry.

Female Empowerment Pottery Workshop

Monday 06 March, 14:00 - 16:00, SUSU Building 42: We've invited Pottery Society to run a workshop for all students on the theme of 'Female Empowerment', aiming to promote body positivity and help women feel empowered and love their bodies. This is a two-part workshop: in the first workshop (06 March) we will be taught how to use air dry clay to create a vase in the shape of a woman's body; in the second workshop (09 March) we will use acrylic paints to decorate the vases. All materials will be provided. Booking required, free event.

Monday 06 March, 13:00 - 15:00, The Bridge: Join a relaxed discussion about women’s issues at the University of Southampton. We want to hear about your experiences and perspectives, with the opportunity to meet new people and make real change at the University. We will be discussing topics including safety, night-time economy, and period poverty, with space to tailor the discussion to individual interests. Free event.

This conference will give you the chance to network with like-minded students, and gain insights from our speakers on their journey out of university into work. International Women's Day Lecture

Tuesday 07 March, 18:00 - 19:00, online event: "Helping women access better healthcare" with Dr Kizanne James-McCarthy. Winner of the 2022 Alumni Rising Star Award, Kizanne is a women’s rights and health activist and a physician with a passion for global health. During the online event you will have the opportunity to delve into Kizanne’s hugely successful career, hear about her work helping disadvantaged women around the world access better healthcare, and understand how she’s overcome her own barriers along the way.
