Lobby for all buildings to be able to be opened with student ID regardless of time of day

Complete

This would be beneficial to students as it would make more study areas accessible later in the day when the library is busy. It would also benefit societies who book rooms after hours and then can't access the building due to the swipe card access not working. It would save the security team spending their time letting people into buildings they need to get into as well which is surely not a productive use of their time. It also increases accessibility of toilets to those on campus after hours which are otherwise very tricky to find besides in the library.

The student ID is used to let us into many buildings during the day to maintain security, why can this same principle not be applied throughout the evening as well? Most societies don't meet before 6pm so it would make the use of facilities accessible to all.

Hi,

I've had a meeting with the Interim Executive Director of Estates regarding this 'You Make Change'. After careful consideration, the University has decided that this would not be feasible. Opening building regardless of time would result in security needing to be present within all proposed newly accessible buildings due to safety and liability concerns. This is a policy to keep students safe int he event of an emergency. In addition, opening building throughout the day/night that would normally not be accessible would not be sustainable. The University aims for students to move into specific more buildings outside of normal working hours ie Hartley Library, so that our carbon impact can be reduced.

However, in the face of the cost-of-living crisis the University will be identifying more energy friendly buildings that may open later throughout the winter term to provide students with a warm place to stay later into the night to reduce their energy bills. These areas will be ideally tailored to students needs such that greater study space is available. This will be a long process that we at SUSU will be advertising broadly once launched. As such, I will be closing this submission for now. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me at president@soton.ac.uk

Hi,

Thank you for this submission. Apologies for the lateness of this response, we have been undergoing handover and induction of the new Sabbatical Team.

I have raised this with the Director of Estates within the University. This is now being actively investigated and I am expecting to receive a concrete answer in the coming days. I will post updates here!
