Complete

I have no idea who I could ask about this, but I feel the gym shuts very early (10 o'clock) and was wondering if there was anyway we could get it open later, even just till 11 o'clock?

Hi,

Sport and Wellbeing are reconsidering the issue of opening hours due to competition from Puregym and a drop in membership. This is good news as they are listening to student feedback and are recognising the 24 hour lifestyle of students does not always work around a facility open until 10. For the first time we are also looking at partial opening of Jubilee. The pool and sports hall cost a lot of money to keep open in terms of staffing, lighting and heating, but the same can not be said for the gym which is also where the main focus of the overcrowding is occurring. It is also important to note that sports facilities at most other universities close at around 10pm, meaning that this is not out of ordinary in the sector.

To summarise, there is a possibility that this might happen soon, but nothing is confirmed yet. I will be lobbying Sport and Wellbeing to implement this throughout my term in office and hopefully we will see a change by the end of the academic year. As this is an ongoing policy aim of the Sports Zone I am closing this You Make Change. If any more updates are made I will notify students via email and social media.

Best wishes,

Steve Gore

Hi there,

Apologies for the lateness of this follow up.

Later gym hours is definitely a policy that I'd like to pursue, and I have discussed this with Sport and Wellbeing management on multiple occasions since starting this role. The crux of the issue comes down to how S&W splits shifts to cover the staffing of the facilities. According to management, they would have to hire an extra supervisor and take on more staff than I had assumed and that the cost of this would be in excess of £80,000. I have requested a copy of the document that details their research into this so that I can see how they have worked it out. Once I have read through this document I will hopefully be able to make a more informed assessment of its viability and get back to you.

Best wishes,

Steve Gore

Me too, I would like the gym to be open more often. 24/7 if possible.
