Earth Day 2026 is today and this year the theme is “Our Power, Our Planet”. Harriet Ramsey – a first year Marine Biology student – shares her tops tips on the simple actions everyone can take for the planet.
University life is busy, social, and sometimes a little chaotic but it’s also the perfect time to build sustainable habits that can last a lifetime. Being eco-friendly as a student doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming with a few simple swaps and small changes, you can make a real difference!
Get involved and give back
- Looking for a way to meet new people and boost your CV? Volunteering is a great place to start. Check out The Wildlife Trust for hands-on conservation activities and the SO:Linked directory for local volunteering opportunities including litter picks and gardening.
- Join a sustainability focused society such as Wildlife Society or Conservation Volunteers.
- Take part in sustainability-focused Student Innovation Projects and tackle real-world challenges set by employers.
Reuse, repair, repeat
- Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bags.
- Reuse jars and containers for food storage or organisation.
- If you cycle, get regular check-ups from the campus Bike Doctor to keep your bike road-ready. The Bike Doctor is on the Redbrick fortnightly on Fridays during term-time.
Eat greener on a budget
Eating sustainably doesn’t mean sacrificing taste or spending more.
- Try adding more vegetables and pulses to your meals each week. Studies suggest that a high-fibre, plant-based diet is better for your health, and swapping meat for pulses like chickpeas and beans can be cheaper: a win win.
- Shop at local markets for fresh, seasonal produce.
- Reduce food waste by planning meals and using leftovers creatively.
Make your digital life greener
Sustainability doesn’t stop offline and even small digital changes can contribute to a bigger impact.
- Switch to a more eco-conscious search engine like Ecosia.
- Be mindful of energy use by turning off devices when not in use, this can also save you money in the long run
Shop smarter: thrift and second-hand finds
- Explore local charity shops for affordable and unique clothing.
- Try online platforms like Vinted, Depop, eBay, or Shpock for second-hand bargains.
- Buy pre-loved books from sites like Better World Books, Oxfam Books, or World of Books.
Sustainable student living isn’t about being perfect, it’s about making better choices when you can. Whether it’s reusing a water bottle, cycling to lectures, or picking up a second-hand jumper, every small step adds up. Start where you are, do what you can, and be part of creating a more sustainable future; one habit at a time.
