Sports Clubs

Looking to stay active, meet new people, or try something new alongside your research? With over 90 sports on offer — including everything from Archery to Quadball, Cheerleading to Windsurfing — there’s something for everyone, whatever your experience or ability.

As a PGR student, you can represent the University by joining Team Southampton and competing at a national level, or take a more relaxed approach by joining an Intramural team for friendly, recreational games. Whether you’re looking to stay fit, de-stress, or simply connect with others, getting involved in sport is a great way to enhance your postgraduate experience.

Societies

Societies are a great way to meet others, take a break from research, and get involved in university life. With over 240 to choose from, there’s something for everyone.

Some societies are tailored specifically for Postgraduate students, offering a chance to connect with fellow researchers, share experiences, and build your community beyond your department.

Start or Run a PGR Society with SUSU Support

Being part of a society can be a rewarding part of your postgraduate journey — and SUSU is here to support you.

If you affiliate your PGR society with the Students’ Union, you’ll get access to help with running your group, organising events, and applying for funding.

The Advice Centre

Postgraduate research can come with unique challenges — whether it’s funding concerns, housing issues, or navigating academic processes. The SUSU Advice Centre is here to support you with free, confidential, and independent advice tailored to all students, including PGRs.

Whether you’re unsure about your funding options, experiencing difficulties with your supervisor, or need help understanding your accommodation rights, The Advice Centre is there to help.

If our online resources don’t answer your questions, reach out directly to advice@susu.org.

The Doctoral College

The Doctoral College is here to support you throughout your time as a PGR student, acting as a hub for Southampton’s doctoral research student community.
