Why vote for Emily Bastable?
Most student trustees serve for more than one term because of the necessary training being a trustee takes. Being a trustee is an incredibly important job, with the financial and legal responsibility to make sure SUSU is stable and prosperous. I believe I have the creative and problem solving skills to be an active member of the board, these skills have been further developed by my time as a Sabbatical officer and as a current member of the trustee board.
As the current VP Education and Democracy, I have been involved with a range of our democratic structures including elections, senate, an All-Student vote, and an AGM. These processes could be improved for a rapidly changing cohort of students, who engage with us in different ways as they did pre-pandemic. If elected, I would like to work on a strategy to make sure our democratic processes are relevant and inclusive to all students.
Finally, the senior leadership team at SUSU relies on its 4 student trustees to provide valuable insight into student life to inform decisions. I have had the pleasure of meeting many students and academic reps, and I believe I can represent their perspectives to the leadership team. Student voice should always be prioritised as part of any Union’s decision, and I will make sure SUSU continues to do this.
