Key Points

  • Clearer and increased communication from the Department.
  • Greater promotion and access of Digital Humanities.
  • Expand extra academic support in the department.
  • A history-specific job fair.
  • Continue working with students, as I have done as course rep.

I have been a course rep since I joined Southampton university. Some parts of the department work well: there is outstanding teaching, facilities and support. However, there is more we can do to make it as good as it can be.

I will continue to work with the department to ensure that all of the assets of the history department are fully and regularly used - especially digital humanities. This is a great asset, but too few students know what it is, or how to access it.

I will also work to improve the relationship between the university careers department and the history department, with the aim of bringing a history-specific jobs fair, so that all year groups can feel confident about securing work experience, internships and eventually, a career.

Both of these would require an improvement in the department's communication. Blackboard notices go unread by many students, so they may miss out on some of the great things happening. I will work to establish a new way for the department to communicate with students to ensure that every message and event is heard.

Hopefully I can count on your support to continue to improve History at Southampton.
