Key Points

  • Improve graduate prospects by promoting career-centric initiatives.
  • Address issues impartially when scrutinising the sabbaticals' action plans.
  • Appeal for transparency into the sabbaticals’ decision-making process.
  • Encourage initiatives that support students from a minority/underrepresented background.

Hi! I am Thasmia, a 2nd Year Mechanical Engineering student and I am running to be one of your senators this year.

The five sabbaticals you elected are paid a HUGE sum (over £100,000, combined) to represent you and make decisions that directly impact and improve your university experience. However, they are often met with complex scenarios when students are unsatisfied with their decisions. This is usually a result of inefficient planning, poor execution or external circumstances.

To minimize this, I will:

-  Actively ensure that the sabbaticals act with the best interest of the student body in mind. (A student body comprising of not just those based on Highfield campus but also Avenue, NOCS, Boldrewood, General Hospital, and WSA.).

-  Work with other senators to ensure that the sabbs are held accountable for and are transparent with the decisions made.

- Implement an effective feedback system that collects feedback from students both, before and after a project is executed.

That said, my main focus this year will be supporting initiatives that improve employability and graduate prospects. Despite the resources available, careers, employability and professional development events are not emphasized enough. I will work on making these resources readily accessible by everyone so you feel prepared entering competitive post-pandemic job markets. Furthermore, I will promote networking and career guidance events that provide extra support for students from underrepresented/minority backgrounds OR for anyone needing extra support.

As a course representative in my first year, I was able to communicate student’ difficulties to the faculty during which I resolved matters objectively and impartially. Given my experience working in SUSU and a strong interest in public speaking, I will scrutinise but also support the sabbaticals to ensure that their plans are executed successfully.

Nevertheless, I recognize the challenges faced by different groups of students and I will work to ensure that everyone’s best interests are valued and prioritised throughout.

Thank you
