Capoeira
Join NowPerforming Arts Dance
Capoeira was born out of the slave trade around 500 years ago in Brazil. It was developed by the slaves as a martial art, however it was designed to look like tribal dances and rituals so that the slave masters would not suspect the violent aspect of the art. A crucial component of learning Capoeira has been the ability to mask your movements and intentions in an apparently non-threatening dance, combining combat and music. At Southampton we have an enthusiastic Capoeira teacher, Mestre Joaozinho, who teaches the Angola style of Capoeira and we also have open training sessions to practice together. You're welcome to come to any of our sessions! Your first session is free. Please see our Facebook group for more info(https://www.facebook.com/groups/SouthamptonCapoeiraSociety/?ref=bookmarks) or if you have any more questions feel free to email us.

Jazz Dance at the University of Southampton is an expanding and diverse society which provides fun and challenging classes, aimed at 3 different abilities: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Our objective is to ensure that our members enjoy themselves whilst being able to participate in a wide variety of dance styles: from traditional jazz, to contemporary jazz and commercial routines, we endeavour to appeal to everyone – if not, we always welcome suggestions and improvements so that we can extend our programme. Not only do we have 3 weekly classes, but we also perform 3 routines in the annual Pure Dance Show which is always a highlight of the dance calendar. Furthermore, there is an opportunity to audition and be a part of the Novice or Advanced Dance Squads who compete at competitions all over the country. This is an amazing experience and gives our dancers a chance to perform in a completely different environment. Additionally, every year we try to organise 2 workshops, taught by professionals from the industry which are very popular and inspiring. With classes, squads and Pure Dance, there are so many opportunities to make new friends and meet people from the other societies within USD. Most importantly, we are a friendly society, offering a range of socials throughout the year, from nights out to movie and pizza nights in, so hopefully there is something for everyone!

Piano Society
Join NowPerforming Arts Music
Piano Society is a friendly environment for all people interested in listening to or performing piano of any genre, at any level. We generally discuss all things piano-related. We try to spread the love of piano music. Increase interest for the piano. Make more use of pianos lying around on campus by putting together concerts and playing times, perhaps even one day funding our own piano. We want to be able to offer members who want to pick up piano playing during their time at university classes, for all sorts of levels, ranging from people who have never touched a piano before to those who just want to continue practising. Our society will cater adequately for pianists of all degrees, something no other society does; especially for those piano players who aren't at a high enough level to join the university orchestra or at a low enough level to forget about piano playing altogether. We also offer piano lessons ranging from beginners to advance levels. There is a definite demand for Piano Society; many people play the piano but never really get to meet other pianists since an individual activity. We provide a network of pianists, teachers and people who just have a general love for piano music.
