How to Comply with Data Protection Policy

Information held by the Student Group, which may be held on paper or on a computer or other media, is subject to certain legal safeguards specified in the Data Protection Act 1998.

When collecting or storing personal data, the following ‘golden rules’ should be observed.

Data should be:

  • used fairly and lawfully
  • used for limited, specifically stated purposes
  • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • accurate
  • kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
  • handled according to people’s data protection rights
  • kept safe and secure
  • not transferred outside the UK

SUSU will also employ the same safeguards when dealing with information provided to them by a student group.
